What's Our Purpose? AI Can't Take Our Art

Wow.

I've been sitting here thinking about artificial intelligence, and honestly? It's doing my head in.

Not because I don't understand it, I do. Not because I'm scared of it, I'm not. But because I'm watching something happen right now that we need to talk about before it's too late.

And I'm not going to sugarcoat it: we're sleepwalking into a future where we forget how to be human.

Let me explain.

THE TRUTH ABOUT AI…

AI Doesn't Create Anything. It Just Copies Really Well.

Here's the thing about AI that nobody seems to want to say out loud: it doesn't actually create anything.

It gathers information. It pulls from millions of images, songs, texts... things that real people made... and it stitches them together to look like something new.

But it's not new. It's mimicry. It's theft dressed up as innovation.

Think about it like this: AI can generate an image that looks like oil on canvas. Impressive, right? But here's what it's never done...

Mixed burnt sienna and titanium white on a palette until it became the exact shade of sunset you needed. Felt the drag of thick paint across texture. Made a mistake and realised it's better than what you planned. Stood back, squinted, and thought "more blue, less shadow, that corner needs light."

AI steals, mimics, and assembles. Humans feel, choose, and create.

A real piano is a real piano. The weight of the keys. The vibration through your chest when you hit a chord. The split-second decision to hold a note or let it go. The feeling that makes you play this instead of that.

AI can mimic the sound of a piano. It can analyse a million pieces and spit out something that sounds "like" music. But it's never felt the keys. It never picked a note because something inside said "yes, that one."

And that is the difference? That's everything.

The Artificial Tree Problem (Or: Why This Actually Matters)

Alright, I know this sounds mad, but stay with me because this analogy is going to make everything click.

Imagine we built artificial trees. Proper high-tech ones that "breathe"... filter air, produce oxygen, the whole lot. Technically brilliant, yeah?

But they're not real trees…

They can't grow from a seed. They can't adapt. They can't provide homes for birds or drop leaves that feed the soil. They can't live for centuries, holding the history of the land in their rings.

And here's the painful truth… they can't stop us from cutting down real trees.

Only we can do that. The artificial tree doesn't solve the problem... it just lets us pretend we have fixed a problem… while the real damage keeps happening.

AI is exactly the same.

It mimics art, music, writing. But it's not real creation. And here's what most people don't realise… AI is built on military and government technology... designed for surveillance, control, data analysis. It was never meant for daily use by everyone.

Now it's in the hands of children writing school essays, people who trust it blindly, and corporations flogging it as "creativity" when it's just... well, theft.

That should worry you. Because we're handing powerful tools to people without teaching them the limits... or the consequences.

What We're Losing (And Why I'm Banging On About It)

When a child uses AI to write an essay, they're not learning to organise their thoughts, struggle with ideas, or develop their own voice. They're not building the mental muscles that turn them into capable adults.

When someone uses AI to "make art," they're not learning to trust their hands, sit with discomfort, or create something that's actually theirs.

We're raising a generation that can't think, can't create, can't trust themselves... because a machine does it for them. We are teaching older generations that all their work meant nothing… but that is not true…

And when you buy AI-generated art? You're not buying hours of a human's life... their focus, energy, presence... You're not buying their choices... every brushstroke is a decision. You're not buying their story... what they were feeling, learning, becoming while they made it. You're not buying proof they existed... "I was here. I made this. It's real."

AI can only give you a copy of what real humans already did. It is disposable… Surface level and fake…  It's like buying a photocopy of a love letter and pretending it was written for you.

It's hollow. And deep down, you know it.

But Here's Where It Gets Better (I Promise)

Right, I know this all sounds a bit doom and gloom. Stick with me... there's hope, and it's bigger than you think.

Because here's the truth… traditional skills will survive because they work.

Painting. Playing piano. Sculpting. Sewing. These aren't hobbies. They're not "nice to have." They're survival skills the human has used for centuries… even millenia…

When you learn to paint, you're not just learning a skill. You're learning patience... it takes time, and that's okay. You're learning resilience... you'll mess up, and you'll try again. You're learning presence... you have to be there while you do it. You're learning agency... your hands can make something real.

If we let AI "do it for us," we lose more than art. We lose the ability to trust our own hands and trust the real stories of the people that have lived before us. 

But we don't have to let that happen. And that's where places like The Kontinuum come in.
